Iowa is a land overflowing with genuine hospitality, historic sites, sophisticated cities, beautiful rolling countryside and four seasons of nature at its very best. The mighty Mississippi River on Iowa’s eastern edge provides opportunities for boating, fishing, canoeing and bald eagle watching. The Great River Road National Scenic Byway, one of the most famous and longest scenic and historic drives in the US, is a federally-designated route covering 3,000 miles of federal, state and county roads that generally follow the mighty Mississippi from Canada to the Gulf of Mexico.

In the west, the Loess Hill National Scenic Byway allows travellers to explore the rare and spectacular natural landscaping of the Loess Hills region of western Iowa, a fragile place of unique prairie flora and wildlife, farms and villages, nestled together among the Catstep hills. Bluestem and scarlet sumac ripen under the big skies atop this rich yellow-brown loess – ancient soil gathered by winds of a receding age of ice into a high wall that follows the vast Missouri River Valley. The rugged range rises abruptly from the flatlands on the west and melts into the rolling plains on the east, extending 200 miles. In between, travellers will find world-class attractions, charming communities and fabulous events.

Start your visit with breakfast at Bluebird Diner, then explore the colourful Czech Village & New Bohemia District, filled with murals, boutiques, and galleries—catch the farmers market if it’s open. Tour the historic Paramount Theatre and, if time allows, enjoy a matinee show. For lunch, stop at Collins Roadhouse, then stroll along the Cedar River at sunset. Day two begins with breakfast at Gazelle Café, followed by a visit to Brucemore Historic Estate to explore its mansion and gardens. Spend the afternoon at Big Grove Brewery & Taproom or dive into hands-on exhibits at the Science & Discovery Center. Wrap up your trip with some outdoor relaxation at Prairie Park Fishery or Jones Park and enjoy dinner at Cobble Hill or a nightcap at Lion Bridge Brewing Company.

 

Head to Iowa City to wander the lively Pedestrian Mall, explore the Old Capitol Museum, and stroll through the University of Iowa campus, enjoying its architecture and green spaces. Discover the Iowa Avenue Literary Walk, hike and relax at Terry Trueblood Recreation Area, or explore the Macbride Nature Recreation Area for trails and wildlife. End your trip with a visit to the University of Iowa Museum of Art, a tour or performance at The Englert Theatre, and a scenic walk along the Iowa River or in City Park, soaking in the charm of the city.

On Day 4, travel to Dyersville, a small town in eastern Iowa known for its strong German heritage and historic landmarks. Spend the day exploring the community’s cultural and architectural highlights, including the impressive Basilica of St. Francis Xavier, one of the few minor basilicas in the United States. You can also visit the National Farm Toy Museum, which showcases the area’s agricultural history and manufacturing legacy. Take time to walk through the downtown area to appreciate the historic buildings and small-town character that define Dyersville.

Head northeast to Decorah, a charming town nestled in the Driftless Area. Explore the Decorah Fish Hatchery and take a stroll along the Dunning’s Spring Park trails, where you can enjoy waterfalls, scenic streams, and local wildlife. Visit the Vesterheim Norwegian American Museum to dive into Decorah’s rich Norwegian heritage, then wander through the town’s art galleries, shops, and historic downtown. For outdoor adventure, hike the Ice Cave and Trout Run Trail or explore Sugar Creek Park for river views and natural beauty. End your days soaking in the small-town charm with scenic drives along rolling hills, covered bridges, and winding country roads.

Arrive in Mason City, a city renowned for its rich history and architecture. A highlight of the day is the Frank Lloyd Wright Stockman House also visit the Mason City Rock Crest-Rock Glen Historic District, which features notable early 20th-century homes and landscapes. End the day with a walk through the city’s public parks or along the scenic trails of the nearby rivers, combining architectural exploration with Mason City’s natural surroundings.

On your last day, make the scenic drive from Mason City back to Cedar Rapids, enjoying the rolling hills and small-town charm along the way. Stop at any points of interest you may have missed, like local parks, covered bridges, or charming roadside towns. Once back in Cedar Rapids, take a final stroll along the Cedar River or revisit a favourite spot in Czech Village & New Bohemia District to soak in the city’s artsy, historic atmosphere before wrapping up your Iowa adventure.
