Purely America

While 48 hours in San Antonio is short, this curated itinerary ensures you maximise every moment

of your limited time in the city.

DAY 1

Historic Roots & Riverside Charm

Morning: Standing in the Footsteps of Heroes

  • The Alamo: Start your holiday at Texas' most famous landmark. Entry to the core historic grounds and the solemn Alamo Church is completely free, but you must pre-book a timed-entry reservation on The Alamo Tickets Portal to secure entry. Spend 1 to 2 hours viewing the original limestone fortress walls and the daily living history demonstrations. If you want a deeper look, consider upgrading for $14 to access the Ralston Family Collections Center, which houses a massive collection of artifacts donated by musician Phil Collins.

Midday: Fiesta Flavours & Artisan Plazas

  • Historic Market Square (El Mercado): Take a short stroll or hop onto the Old Town Trolley to the largest Mexican market in the United States. Wander through the vibrant indoor and outdoor stalls packed with authentic leather goods, pottery, and mariachi music.
  • Tex-Mex Lunch: Sit down for an iconic lunch at Mi Tierra Café or La Margarita right in the square.

  • La Villita Historic Arts Village: Head back toward the river to explore San Antonio’s original 18th-century settlement. This collection of beautifully restored adobe structures now serves as a hub for local painters, sculptors, and textile artists.

Evening: Winding Down on the Water

  • GO RIO River Cruise: Walk right down to the riverbanks to catch a 35-minute narrated boat ride with GO RIO Cruises. Relax on an eco-friendly electric barge as a local guide shares stories of the city's architecture and the famous Selena’s Bridge.
  • River Walk Dinner: Grab an outdoor table right on the water at Boudro’s Texas Bistro. Try their famous tableside-guacamole and prickly pear margaritas.
  • "The Saga" Light Show: Walk over to Main Plaza to view a stunning, 24-minute video projection art piece by artist Xavier de Richemont. It plays directly onto the facade of the San Fernando Cathedral, painting the story of San Antonio's history with vibrant lights and music. It is totally free to view.

DAY 2

Architecture, Gardens & Sky-High Views

Morning: A UNESCO World Heritage Trail

  • San Antonio Missions National Historical Park: While the Alamo is well known, San Antonio is also home to four larger, magnificent Spanish colonial missions that form a protected UNESCO World Heritage Site. Entry to the park is completely free. Start your tour at Mission San José, often called the "Queen of the Missions" due to its scale and stunning stone carvings. If you enjoy being active, you can rent a rental bicycle through the city's bike-share program to ride along the scenic Mission Reach path.

Midday: Historic District to Peaceful Gardens

  • The Pearl District: Head north to this beautifully redeveloped, late-1800s brewery complex. It is now the city's culinary capital, bustling with independent boutiques, coffee shops, and green spaces. Grab lunch at Southerleigh Fine Food & Brewery or sample artisan foods inside the food hall.
  • Japanese Tea Garden: Take a quick rideshare to Brackenridge Park to see a hidden local treasure. Operating in a reclaimed stone quarry, this free public garden features a dramatic 60-foot waterfall, stone bridges, and ponds filled with giant Koi fish.

Evening: Dinner in the Clouds

  • Tower of the Americas: Conclude your holiday at the Hemisfair park grounds by ascending the 750-foot observation deck. Take an elevator 623 feet into the sky to watch the sunset over the vast Texas horizon.
  • Farewell Drinks or Dinner: For a special final night, book a table at the tower's rotating Chart House Restaurant for panoramic steaks and seafood. Alternatively, head back down to the ground level and enjoy a rustic craft cocktail nearby at The Esquire Tavern, which features the longest wooden bar top in the state of Texas.
