Purely America

A serene Southwest Florida destination on the Charlotte Harbor Gulf Island Coast.

Think of your ideal Florida holiday!...

Does it involve battling theme park crowds, hunting for scarce beach parking, and dining at the same predictable chain restaurants? Or does it look like waking up to a golden sunrise over a glassy harbour, paddling past wild dolphins in hidden mangrove tunnels, and enjoying fresh catch-of-the-day at a family-owned tiki bar?

If you crave the latter, it is time to set your sights on Punta Gorda/Englewood Beach.

Tucked away along Southwest Florida’s stunning Gulf Coast, this hidden gem—known as the Charlotte Harbor Gulf Island Coast—is where the soul of "Old Florida" is proudly preserved.

Everyone can discover an ideal vacation in Punta Gorda/Englewood Beach, from natire lovers and art connoisseurs to sports enthusiasts and foodies, whether they're singles, couples, families, or friend groups.

For the outdoorsy, there are many parks, wildlife preserves and sanctuaries just waiting to be explored. Athletes will revel in hiking and biking around Punta Gorda on a free loaner bike. Families will find many children friendly activities and birders will be in avian heaven.

Boating and water enthusiasts can find adventures of all kinds, from world-class fishing to a variety of boat rentals to paddling through some of the nearly 200 miles of Blueway Trails, or simply sailing.

Beach lovers will relish spending a day basking in the sun and gathering fossilized shark teeth and seashells on one of the pristine beaches on Manasota Key or one of our secluded Gulf Islands.

Those looking for art and culture will appreciate live performances, museums, historical murals, our amazing variety of cuisine, and gallery hopping.

Two Distinct Worlds, One Unforgettable Destination

This unique region offers the ultimate double-sided holiday, seamlessly blending a historic harbour town with pristine, untouched barrier islands.

On the harbour side sits historic Punta Gorda. This walkable waterfront town feels like a postcard brought to life. Here, you can borrow a complimentary bicycle from the city's free loaner program and cruise along the scenic 2.5-mile Harborwalk. Stop to admire the vibrant public murals, or spend an afternoon exploring Fishermen's Village, a lively overwater complex bustling with independent boutiques, harbour-view cafes, and live music.

When the Gulf sand calls, a scenic 30-minute drive delivers you to Englewood Beach and its surrounding islands. Here, high-rise condos are replaced by sweeping sea oats and soft sand.

An Outdoor Oasis

With over 830 miles of shoreline and 70 parks, nature is the true luxury here. At Stump Pass Beach State Park, you can hike secluded trails where prehistoric fossilised shark teeth wash ashore daily. For total seclusion, take a quick boat ride to Don Pedro Island State Park, an enchanting barrier island accessible only by water, where rare gopher tortoises roam free.

Anglers and water-sport enthusiasts will find paradise on Charlotte Harbor, the state’s second-largest marine estuary.

You can navigate 200 miles of the Charlotte Harbor Blueway Trails by kayak, or charter a boat to experience world-class tarpon fishing.

  • Pristine State Parks: The area features undeveloped barrier islands like Stump Pass Beach State Park (excellent for spotting dolphins and long beach walks) and Don Pedro Island State Park, which is entirely remote and only accessible by boat, ferry, or kayak.
  • Shark Tooth Hunting & Shelling: The Gulf beaches here—especially areas like Blind Pass Park—are famous for beachcombing, where visitors regularly discover fossilised shark teeth and rare seashells.
  • Water Trails: Paddlers can explore nearly 200 miles of the Charlotte Harbor Blueway Trails winding through dense mangrove tunnels.
  • Wildlife Encounters: Take a swamp buggy ride at the inland Babcock Ranch Eco-Tours to see alligators and wild hogs, or visit the Peace River Wildlife Center in town, a non-profit dedicated to rescuing and rehabilitating native Florida birds and animals.
  • Peace River Botanical & Sculpture Gardens:  Discover a unique blend of nature and art while exploring beautifully landscaped gardens, over 15,000 square feet of boardwalks and docks, and an impressive collection of large-scale sculptures overlooking the Peace River.

Savour the "Flavour Coast"

After a day of exploring, experience why this region is celebrated as Florida’s Flavour Coast. Because 84% of the harbour shoreline is protected from development, the local ecosystem thrives. The result? Unrivalled seafood. Savour locally caught grouper, snapper, and seasonal stone crab at vibrant waterfront eateries where dress codes never get stricter than a pair of flip-flops.

Notably, the historic core completely bans fast-food and major restaurant chains, ensuring that every culinary dollar supports local chefs and independent establishments.

Key Areas to Explore

The region splits its identity beautifully between a historic harbor town and pristine coastal islands:

  • Downtown Punta Gorda: A highly walkable and bike-friendly historic district decorated with 31 public storytelling murals. The city provides a free yellow loaner bike program, allowing visitors to easily cruise the 2.5-mile waterfront Harborwalk.
  • Fishermen’s Village: Located in Punta Gorda, this bustling waterfront complex is a hub for independent boutique shopping, maritime dining, live music, and marina boat departures.
  • Englewood Beach & Manasota Key: The coastal side of the destination. Englewood Beach offers family-friendly amenities, a 900-foot boardwalk, beach volleyball, and local tiki bars right across the street.

The Beaches

The beach scene in the Punta Gorda/Englewood Beach area is unique and requires a quick geographic clarification: there are no Gulf of Mexico beaches directly in the city of Punta Gorda. Punta Gorda sits inland on Charlotte Harbor.

To sink your toes into the sand, you will take a scenic 30-to-40-minute drive west to Manasota Key and the surrounding barrier islands of Englewood, where you will find miles of pristine, uncrowded coastline.

The Four Main Public Beaches

The barrier islands feature four distinct public beach parks, each catering to a completely different vibe:

Englewood Beach

Manasota Key, FL, USA

The Social Hub. Featuring a premier 900-foot boardwalk, this lively beach offers sand volleyball courts, picnic pavilions with grills, a playground, and showers. It is incredibly convenient because six popular local bars and restaurants sit directly across the street.

Stump Pass Beach State Park

Englewood, FL, United States

The Nature Lover's Oasis. Located at the absolute southernmost tip of Manasota Key, this entirely undeveloped, federally protected park stretches for over a mile. It is framed by the Gulf on one side and the calm Intracoastal Waterway on the other, making it a hotspot for spotting wild manatees, dolphins, and nesting sea turtles.

Blind Pass Beach

Public beach

Englewood, FL, United States

The Secluded Hideaway. Situated in the center of the key, this deeply peaceful stretch features wild mangroves and sea oats. It has far less foot traffic, making it perfect for long, quiet walks away from any commercial presence.

Manasota Key Beach

OpenEnglewood, FL, United States

The Classic Family Choice. Located at the northern tip of the key, this wide beach has gentle, family-friendly waves ideal for swimming. It features an on-site boat ramp and kayak launch giving you instant access to the Intracoastal trails.

World-Class Beachcombing

The beaches of Englewood are globally famous for two treasures that wash ashore daily:

  • Fossilised Shark Teeth: Unlike typical powdery Florida sand, the shoreline here is rich with dark sediment that reveals millions-of-years-old shark teeth. All you need is a colander or a specialized "Florida shovel" to sift through the shell lines.
  • Exotic Shelling: Because the local currents pull directly from the Gulf, beachcombers routinely find beautifully intact conch shells, lightning whelks, and sand dollars, especially along the remote stretches of Stump Pass Beach State Park.

A YEAR ROUND DESTINATION

The region enjoys sub-tropical weather with nearly year-round sunshine and gentle sea breezes blowing off Charlotte Harbor and the Gulf of Mexico. However, the area experiences two distinct travel seasons alongside two highly comfortable transition periods.

Winter & Early Spring (December to March): Peak Season

This is the most popular time to visit due to nearly flawless weather.

  • The Climate: Expect crisp, cool mornings and clear, sunny afternoons with average highs between 24°C and 27°C (75°F to 81°F). Humidity is at its lowest.
  • The Vibe: The area hums with activity. It is the prime time for outdoor dining, golfing, waterfront fire pits, and major local events.
  • Top Activities: Spot migratory birds, attend the Tampa Bay Rays Spring Training games at Charlotte Sports Park, or browse seasonal farmer's markets.

Late Spring & Late Autumn (April–May & October–November): The Sweet Spots

Often considered by locals to be the best times of the entire year, these shoulder seasons offer the perfect balance.

  • The Climate: Warm, highly comfortable days with lower rain risks than summer.
  • The Vibe: Crowds thin out significantly as winter residents head north, meaning open tables at popular waterfront restaurants and wide-open stretches of sand on Manasota Key.
  • Top Activities: Ideal conditions for navigating the mangrove kayak trails or taking an inland swamp buggy tour.

Summer (June to September): The Value Season

Summer brings a much slower, deeply relaxed "island pace" along with excellent travel deals.

  • The Climate: Long, hot, and humid days with highs averaging 32°C (90°F). Most days feature a heavy but brief afternoon thunderstorm that rolls through to cool the evening down.
  • The Vibe: Highly affordable beach house rentals and zero wait times at local eateries.
  • Top Activities: This is peak boating, beach swimming, and world-class tarpon fishing season. To beat the heat, plan outdoor activities for early mornings or late evenings. Punta Gorda / Englewood Beach Visitor & Convention Bureau
